Amelia Selected for EU Horizon Algae Accelerator

Accelerating Algae Development

Amelia is honored to be selected to join the AlgaeProBANOS Accelerator, a European Union funded program focused on advancing algae product development in the Baltic and North Sea regions. This opportunity leverages Amelia's space intelligence capabilities to accelerate the utilisation of Earth's sustainable resources.

Hidden Potential of Algae

Algae and seaweed are among Earth's most efficient biological systems.

"Microalgae can be grown in high concentrations in shallow ponds of saline water, yielding up to 10 times more biomass per hectare than conventional crops such as wheat or vegetables," says University of Melbourne Associate Professor Greg Martin.

These remarkable organisms have been evolving for over 3 billion years, developing extraordinary adaptations that science is only beginning to fully understand and utilize. Beyond their well-known applications in food and cosmetics, algae species are attempting groundbreaking potential across industries [\[1\]](https://www.phycoworks.com/)[\[2\]](https://www.phycobloom.com/)[\[3\]](https://variconaqua.com/):

- Climate mitigation: Seaweeds like kelp can sequester carbon at rates 20 times higher per acre than forest land [\[4\]](https://oceanvisions.org/can-seaweed-cultivation-help-fix-the-climate-crisis/). - Biodegradable packaging: Algal biopolymers are creating plastic alternatives that decompose safely in marine environments [\[5\]](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ese.2020.100065). - Pharmaceutical breakthroughs: Compounds from algae are showing promising results in antiviral and anticancer research [\[6\]](https://doi.org/10.37349/eds.2023.00032). - Agricultural revolution: Algae-derived biostimulants can substantially reduce fertilizer needs while improving crop yields [\[7\]](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.148913).

Advancing Our Planetary Potential

The Baltic and North Sea regions, with their unique brackish waters and ecological challenges, represent both an opportunity and testing ground for these innovations. Through Amelia's space-powered intelligence, we can optimize cultivation, protect natural populations, and identify new sustainable harvesting zones.

Amelia is excited to collaborate with the AlgaeProBANOS community. If you are working in water quality management, algae harvesting, or blue economy innovation and would like to connect, please contact us.
